When I first told a teammate in my personal training small group that I was going to be a chiropractor, she responded with, “Why would you want to do that? You go to a chiropractor once, you have to go three times a week for the rest of your life.” I couldn’t image having to see her three times a week for the rest of my life and thought to myself, “Certainly, there is a better way.”
And there is! It’s called prevention. I am much more interested in working with you to maintain health than I am in trying to cure disease or heal trauma.
For example, consider two post-injury possibilities. In the first instance, the injured party is a married 40 year old female who works full-time and has three children. She never takes any time for herself, doesn’t exercise, and frequently runs through the fast food drive through to pick up dinner for her family.
She is rear-ended. A friend advises her to see a chiropractor. She goes and is told she needs to be adjusted 3 times a week, for at least a month. She keeps her appointments, but is frustrated because the effects of the adjustments don’t last beyond a few hours and sometimes she can’t tell any difference at all.
After exploring her allopathic options, she is still in pain and finds herself relying on prescription pain medications while she continues not to take any time for herself, exercise, or do anything to change her diet. She tells her friends, that chiropractic doesn’t work.
In the second instance, the injured party is also a married 40 year old female who works full-time and has three children. She loves to paint and takes the occasional hour or two for herself to do just that. She uses it as an outlet to offset some of the stress from her busy life.
She is health conscious and engages in a holistic approach for herself and her family. She does a little bit of yoga each week and walks regularly. 80% of her diet is filled with fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and fiber-rich beans and legumes. Every now and then, she enjoys a delicious piece of pie or takes her kids out for ice cream.
Her and her husband are on the same page and they support each other in their personal endeavors. They both get adjusted regularly each month.
She, too is rear-ended with significant impact and she definitely feels it the next day. After getting thoroughly checked out at the hospital and released, she makes an appointment with her chiropractor.
Within 7 to 10 visits she is 85% better and resumes once a month adjustments with specific instructions on exercises she can do daily and supplements she can take to get her back to 100%.
She was already aligned and in great physical shape prior to the accident. Therefore, she recovered quite quickly. She raves about chiropractic and tells everyone that will listen how they could really benefit by being adjusted.
Two women. Same accident. Drastically different results. You can see in these examples that chiropractic care (while significant) was just one difference between these two women. In the case of the first woman, getting an adjustment was like throwing up a Hail Mary Pass when down by 25 with seconds to go in the game. In the case of the second, getting adjusted was part of holistic approach to a life well-lived. I understand that this example is extreme. That being said, look at the people in your life that you know have gone to the chiropractor. You’ll probably find it pretty easy to place them in one category or the other.
There is no doubt about it – I am passionate about working with the people that get it! They see what chiropractic does for them, how it adds to their holistic approach to life, and they make it a priority.
